From July 15, 2023, LAID BUG will present a solo exhibition by Yushi Arimura.

Based in Kagoshima, Yushi Arimura continuously records a diverse array of subjects using a film camera through his local fieldwork. Whether capturing a quietly undulating sea, predawn mountains shimmering with night dew, wildlife, or forgotten architecture, his photographic works—cut with a profound gaze—are precisely framed alongside the light present at that moment, bringing forth the true essence inherent in each subject.

This exhibition will feature approximately 30 works selected from Arimura's extensive photographic archive. For the artist, the process of re-examining and re-editing a vast collection of past film not only revives forgotten memories but also evokes events that may never have occurred.

An exposed roll of film found in a car seat, a landscape he cannot remember shooting, failed exposure settings, a portrait altered by a lens filter, a sense of nostalgia in a port town visited for the very first time, and a still life so vivid one can almost hear voices. Presented alongside these ambiguous memories, the artworks intertwine with the landscapes resting within the viewers' own minds, evoking a fresh and vivid sense of déjà vu.
